Northwest Treasures is private acessible half-day-tour visiting the Valley of the Fallen and the Monastery of El Escorial. First, we will visit the Valley of the Fallen, the grand monument for Spain’s civil war casualties. This complex has the tallest memorial cross in the world. We will discover the inside of the basilica and admire a spectacular valley landscape around this massive monument, which is located lose to El Escorial. Our next stop will be The Monastery of El Escorial, which houses the Mausoleum of Spanish Monarchs. We will tour the monastery visiting the Royal Palace, the Basilica, the Pantheon, Pantheons of the Princes, the Chapter House and Library of the Kings of Spain. El Escorial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
9am. Pick-up at your hotel in Madrid. Transfer to the Valley of the Fallen.
Valley of the Fallen: visit to the Basilica in the valley of Cuelgamuros. The Valley of the Fallen is located about 9 kilometers from El Escorial. It is a huge monument built between 1940 and 1959 to honor the Spaniards killed during the civil war. The basilica carved into the mountain at 1,350 meters above sea level, where an impressive cross of 150 meters high is overlooking the magnificent nature reserve of the Sierra de Madrid where the valley is located. The inside of the basilica is not accessible by wheelchair.
Monasterio de El Escorial: This wonderful building is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. El Escorial was built as a symbol of the strength of the Spanish empire in the sixteenth century and commemorates the Battle of San Quentin. It is also the mausoleum of King Charles V. During the visit you enter the palace of the Habsburgs, to the Pantheon of the kings, Chapter Rooms, the Patio de los Reyes, the Crypt for the Princes and Princess, the impressive Library and the Basilica. Some rooms of the Monasterio de El Escorial are not accessible by wheelchair.
